Summary
This article will cover how to input Referrals and Professionals, as well as how to modify them on the Patient's Referral/Professional tab. First, we will cover the source from which the Referrals and Professionals are retrieved to be displayed in the search (the magnifying glass) within the patient's Referral/Professional tab. Then we will cover entering and or modifying the Referrals and Professionals.
NOTE: When updating a referral or professional on a patient's account, please avoid using the "Edit" function. Editing the referral or professionals information from the Edit > Patient > Referrals/Professionals tab will alter the original entry in the people setup and will affect all patient's associated with that professional or referal.
Instead, please delete the existing referral or professional and then search for and select the new on on the patient Referral/Professional tab to ensure accurate updates. Only edit a Professional/Referral's information by going to Edit > Setup > People.
Where the Referrals and Professionals are retrieved to be displayed in the search within the patient's Referral/Professional tab
- The Referrals and Professionals are found under the People category in Edit > Setup > People. Access to this area requires appropriate permissions within the Employee setup, (Edit Library Items Permission.) Please see screenshot below to access the Employee setup.
- Select the employee and click "Edit" to access Permissions. Then, check the box for "Edit Library Items" to enable permission to access the People category. Within the People section, you can add new referring doctors if they are NOT already listed. Use the Search function to verify whether the individual is already in the system to avoid creating duplicate entries. Duplicate entries may cause issues on patient's accounts.
How to add a Referral/Professional to the patient's account
Navigate to the patient's account, click the Referrals/Professionals tab. For Referral In, click Add.
You can select Referral Type: Person or Company. Click the magnifying glass to search for the Person or Company then use the drop-down arrow to select the Relationship Type. (Note the Relationship Type MUST be selected.) If the person is a professional check the box that says "Is the Patient's Professional", then click OK.
- When adding Professionals follow the same instructions as above. When you click Add, search the Person or Company, select the Relationship Type. If this is a different person from the Referral you added but they also referred the patient to you click Referred the Patient to Us. This will automatically add this person to the Referrals In.

Updating referral and professional information when changes are necessary
- Please select "Delete" on the patient's Referral/Professional tab rather than "Edit" (refer to the note in the beginning of this article for more detail), before proceeding.
Click "Add" and then search for the new Referral or Professional to select. In the screenshot below I will change the Professional.
